2. Graduate Research Opportunities, Carbon biogeochemistry and metabolism in boreal freshwaters

Several graduate assistantships (PhD and MSc level) are available in the Aquatic Ecology Group of the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQàM), as part of the NSERC-funded Chair in Carbon Biogeochemistry in Boreal Aquatic Systems.

Potential topics include integrating C dynamics and processing across complex surface water networks, regional-scale patterns in aquatic C processing and greenhouse gas dynamics, links between climate, hydrology and aquatic C biogeochemistry, the influence of network configuration on regional aquatic biogeochemical processes, the links between aquatic and terrestrial C biogeochemistry and ecosystem function, and the role of aquatic ecosystems on regional carbon budgets in the boreal biome. These graduate projects will involve both extensive sampling of streams, rivers, ponds and lakes across the boreal biome of Québec, as well as highly spatially resolved sampling along the entire aquatic continuum in selected boreal watersheds.

3. Research Associate

Applications are invited for a 2-year postdoctoral Research Associate at Imperial College London, funded by the UK Natural and Environmental Research Council (NERC).

The Associate will join project VOILA, a consortium of five UK universities and international partners (www.voila.ac.uk). The aim of the post is to improve our understanding of the role of fluids in subduction-mantle wedge processes through numerical modelling and comparison with seismic, petrological and geochemical data collected by the consortium for the Lesser Antilles Arc

The successful candidate will have a PhD (or equivalent) in Geophysics, or a closely related field, with experience in numerical modelling of mantle and/or lithospheric dynamics. Experience with petrological data and thermodynamic modelling, use of seismic data and/or geochemical data is desirable. The appointed researcher is expected to actively work as part of the VoiLA team.
