1. Environmental and Hydrodynamic modeling positon

The College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences (CEMS) at the University of Vermont (UVM) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in environmental modeling, with an expected start date of September 1, 2017. The position is anticipated to be filled at the assistant professor level. The College is seeking an outstanding individual whose research is related to environmental modeling and addresses emerging, critical societal needs at local, national and/or international settings.


The candidate is expected to maintain an active program of externally-funded research and graduate student advising, as well as significantly contribute to the Vermont EPSCoR Basin Resilience to Extreme Events (BREE) project by leading the effort to develop a fully coupled physical/biogeochemical model of Lake Champlain.

2. Curator in Earth and Planetary Science, American Museum of Natural History

The Division of Physical Sciences of AMNH seeks to hire a tenure-track assistant curator in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences.  We seek candidates who will bring petrological and geochemical methods to bear on problems related to planetary evolution.  For example, candidates might integrate field, analytical, and theoretical studies of the rock record to provide insights into fundamental aspects of climate, environmental, and biogeochemical variability through time.  The successful candidate will have demonstrated scientific creativity and the potential to build and sustain an innovative research program.  They will be expected to take advantage of resources available at AMNH, which include world-class geological collections; a wide range of optical, electron beam, and x-ray analytical tools; experimental laboratories; LA-ICPMS facilities shared with Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University; and a program supporting scientific expeditions.  They will oversee and expand the AMNH petrology collection. We welcome an intention and ability to collaborate with colleagues within AMNH and the regional community, including Columbia University and CUNY, and to engage in AMNH’s MA in Teaching of Earth Science and other education initiatives.

4. Quantitative Ecologist

We invite applications for a tenure track position in quantitative ecology, at the level of Assistant or early Associate Professor. We seek candidates with expertise in analyzing large data sets or modeling of processes from the ecosystem to regional or larger scales, with an emphasis on the interactions of human-accelerated environmental change with ecological structure and function and sustainability. We will consider applicants with a strong theoretical, statistical, and/or computational background studying the interactions between organisms (including humans) and the environment as this influences biogeochemistry, ecological function, climate change, community assembly, or broad-scale patterns in biodiversity. The area of expertise could be in any ecosystem. We are particularly interested in individuals who are developing and applying quantitative methods, who are interested in understanding underlying ecological processes, who work at various scales, and who will collaborate with ecologists and evolutionary biologists as well as scientists in related disciplines across Cornell.


Faculty Position: Assistant or early Associate Professor, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Tenure track, academic-year (9-month) appointment with 50% research and 50% teaching.


Qualifications: Applicants should have a Ph.D., demonstrated excellence in research in some aspect of quantitative ecology, such as analyzing big data sets, remote sensing, ecological observation systems, or ecosystem-scale, regional-scale, or Earth system modeling. Candidates should have a strong interest in collaborative research, and a dedication to excellence in teaching. Post-doctoral experience is highly desirable.

6. FACULTY POSITIONS IN GEOPHYSICS

The Dana and David Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences of the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, California, seeks a senior earthquake scientist to lead the Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC) as its director and principal investigator. 10. Offshore Renewable Energy Postdoctoral Associate

The Center for Coastal Marine Sciences at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo is seeking a postdoctoral associate to lead a data analysis and synthesis project to assess the potential for offshore renewable energy along the California central coast. This federally-funded project is highly applied and interdisciplinary, and includes research in physical oceanography, atmospheric dynamics, geography, and geospatial statistics, and to a lesser extent ecology, economics, and social science. The ideal candidate will have strong analytical and data management skills and a Ph.D. in physical oceanography, atmospheric science, geography, marine science, engineering, ecological modeling, or a related field.


Specific research tasks will include: (1) managing and analyzing wind data from oceanographic buoys and satellite measurements across the California central coast region; (2) synthesizing wind data to generate spatial and temporal estimates of wind fields; and (3) developing models to estimate offshore wind power generation potential using turbine specifications. Further analyses may include additional socioeconomic and ecological factors, as well as other related topics of interest to the candidate.

11. Assistant or Associate Professor- Marine Organic Chemistry

We are searching for an innovative, collaborative marine scientist who focuses on the geochemistry of organic molecules in marine habitats ranging from the water column to sediments and from coastal zones to the open ocean. Purpose & Responsibilities:

Currently, AGU has an excellent career opportunity in our dynamic Publications department. The Assistant Director will coordinate, manage, generate, and help edit a wide variety of enriched content related to AGU Publications; with others at AGU, will coordinate social media and other outreach related to this content and AGU journals and books, and will also analyze and conduct research around data associated with AGU Publications broadly. AGU journals publish about 6000 papers per year. This content is enriched and explained through plain language summaries, commentaries in the journals, special issues, editors’ highlights, various content in Eos included Editors’ Vox and Research Spotlights, and featured on AGU social media. The incumbent will work with the AGU editors, AGU Publications staff and the Eos.org staff to manage and coordinate these efforts, and serve as the top editor for this content. The incumbent will also conduct research on data related to AGU meetings, publications, and publications operations to identify or analyze trends or publications practices and to improve operations.


Required Qualifications & Experience:

• 8+ years with MS/MA; Ph.D. in the Earth and space sciences with a minimum of one year additional experience as a post doctoral appointment or other work in science writing, publishing, or editing is highly desired.

• Strong knowledge of metrics in order to determine the effectiveness of action plans, with the ability to make adjustments if and when necessary.
