1.PostDoc on coupled Greenland ice sheet and climate modeling with CESM-CISM

Department Description:

The Postdoc will investigate interactions between the Greenland ice sheet (GrIS) and the climate system with the Community Earth System Model (CESM,http://www2.cesm.ucar.edu/) coupled to the Community Ice Sheet Model version 2 (CISM2, http://oceans11.lanl.gov/cism/index.html). CESM is a global climate model capable of realistic simulation of GrIS surface mass balance, including explicit calculations of melt and refreezing. This research project will participate in the International Model Intercomparison Project 6 (ISMIP6). 

There are two possible topics for this position: 1) GrIS and climate coupling during the last interglacial (127,000 years BP) or 2) The future multi-century coupled GrIS and climate evolution.

 

Requirements:

applicants should have a PhD in glaciology, meteorology, oceanography or Earth Sciences and experience in ice sheet and/or climate modeling. Excellent skills in FORTRAN90 programming, Linux/Unix shell scripting, and handling/visualization of large model output are necessary, as well as in oral and written English.

The possible topics for these two PhD positions are: 1) Future GrIS evolution up to A.D. 2300: surface mass balance processes and coupling with the atmosphere; 2) The future multi-century coupled GrIS and climate evolution; and 3) GrIS and climate coupling during the last interglacial (127,000 years BP).


Requirements:

candidates should have a Master degree in meteorology, glaciology, physical climatology, oceanography, Earth Sciences or Physics, and experience with FORTRAN90 and geophysical models and Unix-Linux environments. 2. Improving and developing new observation methodologies.
Position 1. Assistant Professor of ‘Measurements and high-resolution model development ’ to develop a research line around item 1.
Position 2. Assistant Professor of ‘Atmospheric remote sensing of clouds, aerosols and precipitation’ to develop a research line around item 2.

Job description position 
Seismo-acoustic waves travel through the solid earth, oceans and atmosphere. Sources of these waves are (natural and man-induced) earthquakes, volcanoes, icebergs and calving ice, meteors and severe weather. Information on these sources can be retrieved from network recordings.
Position 3. Assistant Professor of 'Seismo-acoustics in the Geosphere' to set up a research line for developing theory and methods to probe and understand the different sources and geophysical media.

 

Requirements
Candidates must have a PhD in physics or engineering with experience in atmospheric sciences and/or geophysics. Good English speaking and writing skills are required. Post-doctoral experience is an advantage.

4.Planetary Interior Structure and Dynamics Scientist

Description:

AIR is a leading catastrophe modeler providing risk assessment tools to the insurance and reinsurance companies. Our models simulate occurrences of natural perils over countries and even continents and for thousands of years under the current climate conditions. This is necessary to account for the simultaneous individual damages and the estimate of the aggregate economic losses and their distributions for arbitrary collections of individual properties (portfolios) the number of which usually counts to millions.

 

Main Responsibilities:
• Set up, calibrate and run river hydraulic and flash flood models
• Analyze gauge records, study the effects of flood defense structures and tides on river flooding
• Develop computer programs to automate data capture and post-processing of model results
• Develop large scale flood maps based on physical principles

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

12.Postdoctoral Research Associate - Watershed Modeling/Climate Change

The Department of Geography at Indiana University - Bloomington is seeking applicants for a postdoctoral position in watershed modeling in the lab of Dr. Darren Ficklin.  This NSF-funded position focuses on developing contemporary and future climate change-based estimates of streamflow and water temperature in watersheds across the United States and Canada.  The overall goal of the project is to develop the ‘HydroClim’ dataset, which will be integrated with biodiversity data to provide a widely available resource for researchers and water resource managers to investigate the potential impacts of climate change on freshwater resources and biodiversity. 

 

The successful candidate will be expected to develop GIS-based Soil & Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) hydrologic models on high-performance parallel computing systems.  In addition to having experience with SWAT, applicants should have experience with programming languages such as R, Matlab, or Python.  The postdoc will also be encouraged to develop independent lines of research and will have the opportunity to collaborate with biologists, hydrologists, and informatics specialists at Indiana University, Saint Louis University, and Tulane University.

Applications are being accepted for a postdoctoral position in watershed hydrologic modeling in the lab of Dr. Jason Knouft in the Department of Biology at Saint Louis University.  This NSF-funded position focuses on developing contemporary and future climate change-based estimates of streamflow and water temperature in watersheds across the United States and Canada. The overall goal of the project is to develop the ‘HydroClim’ dataset, which will be integrated with biodiversity data to provide a widely available resource for researchers and water resource managers to investigate the potential impacts of climate change on freshwater resources and biodiversity. 

 

A Ph.D. in a related research field is required by the starting date of employment and experience with the SWAT model is preferred. The position is available for two years contingent upon satisfactory annual reviews. The earliest start date is July 1, 2016; however, a later start date is possible.
