2. Post-doctoral Research Associate

The Department of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Utah has an opening for a postdoctoral research associate in the general areas of tropical and mesoscale meteorology with a focus on improving understanding of deep convection and its organization around the world. Our research group typically uses remote sensing and in situ observations from satellites (notably TRMM and GPM), surface sites, and aircraft. Involvement in field campaigns, past and future, is encouraged. A successful candidate will conduct original research, write manuscripts for publication, participate in professional meetings, and collaborate with faculty and graduate students at the University of Utah and other institutions under existing or future grants from NASA, NSF, DOE, or other sponsors.

Qualified applicants should have a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences or a relevant field, a strong mathematics and physics background, excellent writing and speaking skills, and strong programming abilities (familiarity with Linux, FORTRAN, and IDL, Matlab, or Python are desirable). Experience running and analyzing output from atmospheric models such as WRF is also desirable. The position can be started in summer 2018, though the starting date is negotiable based on mutual interest. The initial appointment will be for one year, renewable dependent on performance and availability of funding.

Salary is competitive based on experience and qualifications. The University of Utah offers competitive benefits. The position is open until filled and full consideration will be given to applications received by March 31, 2018.

3. PhD and Post-Doctoral Fellow Positions in Groundwater-Surface Water Interactions

The RESTORE Research Group in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Western University is seeking a post-doctoral fellow and a PhD student to conduct research on assessing the contribution of groundwater in delivering phosphorus to agricultural streams. The post-doctoral fellow and PhD student will work on a large collaborative research project funded by the NSERC Strategic Project Grant Program that aims to evaluate the ecological response of agricultural streams to groundwater-derived phosphorus. The project brings together an interdisciplinary team of engineers, hydrogeologists, and aquatic ecologists from the Departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Geography at Western University, and from Environment and Climate Change Canada. The project includes applying state-of-the-art field techniques to conduct intensive field studies to quantify groundwater phosphorus inputs to agricultural streams in Southern Ontario, Canada, across all four seasons. Responsibilities will include designing and executing field experiments, analyzing and reporting research outcomes, as well as coordinating with the larger research team.  Dependent on the applicant’s background and expertise, reactive transport modeling of phosphorus fate at groundwater-stream interfaces will also be conducted.

6. Cloud Physics Postdoctoral Research Scientist

The Center for Climate Systems Research in the Earth Institute at Columbia University invites applicants for a Post-Doctoral Research Scientist position in cloud physics. This appointment is full-time and located at the Columbia University Morningside campus.

The Postdoc will work on the topic of cloud and aerosol physics over Antarctica in collaboration with modelers and observationalists at NASA GISS, the University of Leicester, Stony Brook University and Brookhaven National Laboratory, which is supported by the Department of Energy's Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) program. The focus of this project will be use of measurements obtained during the ARM West Antarctic Radiation Experiment (AWARE), specifically to evaluate and improve the representation of cloud properties by the NASA GISS ModelE3 climate model. Observed and simulated cloud properties will be considered within the context of the aerosol and meteorological environment over the West Antarctic Ice Sheet using ancillary AWARE, renalaysis and satellite measurements. The applicant will be responsible for preparing long-term lidar and radar measurements for use with a newly developed ground-based lidar-radar simulator for ModelE3, running ModelE3 baseline and sensitivity test simulations, preparing comparisons of aerosol and meteorological conditions with existing reanalysis and satellite data sets, and contributing to model improvement efforts that will be guided by project results.
