1. Climate Product Validation Expert

Bringing together the resources of 30 member states, EUMETSAT observes the atmosphere, ocean, and land surfaces from space using a system of satellites 365 days a year. Our data is vital for weather forecasts that help to protect lives and property, as well as monitoring the environment and our changing climate.  We operate Copernicus missions on behalf of the European Union, providing marine and atmospheric data services to monitor the dynamics of the ocean and marine ecosystems.  We are recruiting for a Climate Product Validation Expert to validate and assess the quality of climate records of Level 2 (geophysical) products produced in support of the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) through the development of diagnostic methods and tools such as variability, trend estimators and automatic comparisons to model outputs.

This is an opportunity to use your expertise to extract geophysical products from data from meteorological or ocean satellites and to use these products in climate research and applications. You will have some experience in managing uncertainties in data, as well as time series analysis. Within this role you will have the opportunity to compile presentations and reports for the C3S progress meetings where observations of the climate are combined with the latest science to develop authoritative quality assured information about the past current and future states of climate in Europe and worldwide.

The Interdisciplinary Hydrology Laboratory (http://www.forh2o.net/) at West Virginia University has an opening for a graduate research assistant (GRA) at the MS, or PHD level. West Virginia University is the state’s flagship research-one institution, and is among the top universities in the nation, with demonstrated excellence in teaching and research. The incumbent will investigate surface water flow and ecological, geochemical regimes in a mixed-land-use watershed of the Appalachian region of the United States. Duties will include field and lab work including stream flow estimations, monitoring, equipment maintenance and the collection- processing- and analyses of data, and / or modeling of chemical and nutrient transport and transformation processes.

3. Associate Director, Center for Advance Energy Studies

Position Summary:

Located in Idaho Falls, ID, the Associate Director – Center for Advanced Energy Studies (CAES), facilitates the development of world-class, advanced, energy research between the Idaho National Laboratory (INL), industry and universities. The Associate Director is responsible for identifying and building strong relationships and programs among the INL, the Idaho Universities, and other CAES affiliates. The position is a joint appointment with the INL, holds faculty rank and may include tenure. The incumbent is expected to provide research leadership in an area of interest to CAES.

The Associate Director – CAES reports to the Vice President of Research and Economic Development (VP-RED), is accountable to the CAES Director, and is a member of the CAES leadership team consisting of a CAES Director (INL) and four Associated Directors one from each of the four CAES member universities-Boise State University (BSU), Idaho State University (ISU), University of Idaho (UI), and University of Wyoming (UW). In addition, the Associate Director ensures coordination and integration of UI and CAES research and educational activities through regular engagement with the Idaho Falls Center Executive Officer (IFC-EO). The VP-RED with inputs from the CAES Director and the IFC-EO conducts the incumbent’s annual performance review. The incumbent will proactively engage with the INL and other CAES institutions to ensure success.

Minimum Qualifications:

• An earned doctorate in a science or engineering discipline from an accredited university.

• Eligible to meet the criteria for rank of Associate or Full professorship at the UI.

• Research focus or interest relevant to the CAES and UI Idaho Falls missions.

• Eligible to obtain and maintain an “L” security clearance.

• This position requires the successful completion of a background check.

• A professional history that meets the criteria for tenure in an appropriate discipline.

4.  Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology International Postdoctoral Fellow

Aim of the Position

JAMSTEC wants to help talented young researchers who have completed promising Ph.D. theses to develop their scientific excellence. For this purpose, JAMSTEC has established an international postdoctoral fellowship programme. It is intended that research grants will be provided to successful applicants which will facilitate smooth start-up of his/her research in JAMSTEC (¥1,000,000 for the first fiscal year and ¥500,000 for each of the second and third years). The successful applicant will also have access to the necessary facilities and equipment at JAMSTEC during the contract period.

Job Description

Successful applicants to this programme are expected to conduct scientific work independently on research topics of their own proposing or to proceed with research at JAMSTEC. 5. Wetland ‘FLUXNET’ synthesis for methane

Stanford University, NASA Goddard, and the University of British Columbia seek a full-time postdoctoral earth scientist or engineer to understand and predict CH4 fluxes across wetlands globally. We are undertaking a synthesis of CH4 flux tower data accompanying a global database of eddy covariance CH4 emissions. By analyzing continuous and high-measurement frequency of flux measurements, our synthesis should provide novel insights into the controls and timing of wetland CH4 emissions. We also plan to apply machine learning algorithms to upscale site-level fluxes to develop a new globally gridded methane product, analogous to what has been done previously for CO2. This database will help parameterize and benchmark the performance of land-surface models of global CH4 emissions, providing a unique opportunity for informing and validating biogeochemical models. Project investigators include Rob Jackson (jacksonlab.stanford.edu), Ben Poulter (https://science.gsfc.nasa.gov/sed/bio/benjamin.poulter), and Sara Knox (https://www.geog.ubc.ca). This international collaboration through the Global Carbon Project (globalcarbonproject.org) is part of a larger effort to improve understanding of sources and sinks in the global methane cycle funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and the USGS Powell Synthesis Center. The postdoctoral scientist will have opportunities to interact with other researchers examining tropical and permafrost methane emissions. 6. GRADUATE OPPORTUNITIES, PhD & MSc, FlareNet Network

Integrated Network Training

Training of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, collectively referred to as “highly qualified personnel” (HQP) is a core emphasis of the FlareNet Network. This is directly reflected in the structure of the research program, which is focused on graduate student projects, exchanges, networking and training activities. The highly integrated nature of FlareNet is designed to provide HQP with exceptional opportunities to go far beyond a typical Canadian graduate student experience by engaging in a Canada-wide, collaborative effort to solve urgent, industrially relevant problems of national and international importance. The array of industry and government partners, both within Canada and internationally, underscores the need for this network, and, equally importantly, will provide unique opportunities for the HQP being trained. The high-profile nature of the topic and the close engagement of these partners are key advantages for enhancing the experiences of the HQP during their research and ensuring their marketability upon graduation.

Most of FlareNet’s HQP will be co-supervised, often by co-supervisors based at different institutions. This is advantageous and possible because of the comprehensive plans for exchanges and resource sharing across the network. The scale of the research means that no student project can occur in isolation — cooperation and collaborations with other HQP at other institutions will be the norm. Every student will be encouraged to participate in at least one reciprocal laboratory visit, and more than two-thirds of HQP will be involved in significant exchanges lasting four to six months over the course of their training.  The extensive sharing of resources and expertise across the network will expose students to new equipment, working environments, and advanced experimental methods that will expand the impact of their own research projects and directly enhance their training. In addition, the large team environment and close collaborations with other HQP and PIs from across the country will stimulate new professional relationships and connections that will stay with these HQP throughout their careers.

7. Postdoctoral researcher in Physical Oceanography

A postdoctoral research position in physical oceanography is available at the Department of Marine Sciences at the University of Georgia. The successful candidate will investigate the oceanic transport of meltwater in the Labrador Sea. The work will build on the results of Luo et al. (Nature Geoscience, 2016) and focus on quantifying the different mechanisms controlling the export of low-salinity coastal water off Greenland. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in physical oceanography or closely related field.
