Hongmen Dialogue: Opportunities and Challenges of Ocean Engineering

2016-06-28 13:43:56

On June 28, "Hongmen Dialogue" forum with the theme of Opportunities and Challenges on Ocean Engineering was held in Overseas Exchange Centre at Peking University. The forum was co-organized by the Institute of Ocean Research of Peking University and College of Engineering.

First, Professor Duan Huiling pointed out that this dialogue was a professional forum aiming to promote the curriculum overlapping and create a new cultivating mode for the graduate students. Then, Academician Gong Qihuang expressed his expectation to the dialogue. He emphasized the important meaning of this activity for promoting curriculum overlapping and accelerating the development process of ocean disciplines. Professor Wang Lei introduced the overall situation of the Institute of Ocean Research, and he pointed out that the institute would take its responsibility of building the ocean platform.

Academician Gong Qihuang addressed a speech

The topic of Dr. Li Jiachun's speech was "Outlook of the ocean engineering in the abysmal and high sea". He said that ocean was of vital importance in the aspect of resource exploitation, space usage, marine transport, scientific research and national security, etc. At present, there are several key problems in this research field including oceanenvironment under extreme stormy waves, possible response under the floating structure on the surface of ocean, offshore floating structures and foundation stability.

The topic of Dr. Zhang Fumin's speech was "Opportunities and challenges of the technical innovation in the ship domain".  He shared information about the current situation and the predicted future about the shipbuilding industry. He suggested that the scale of Chinese shipbuilding industry was among the top groups at present. However, there remains to be a significant gap between the current level and the goal of building a premier ocean-power nation. Only by motivating the industrial technology system, increasing the economic benefit and decreasing the labor cost, can we strengthen the core competitiveness in marine technology.

The topic of Dr. Cao Yusong's speech was "The Ocean Dream, the construction of marine city in the future". He showed the images of future cities floating on the surface of ocean, which was called as "Ocean Dream". Dr. Yusong Cao pointed out that abundant marine resources could provide unlimited possibilities for the exploration and development of human beings. In the future, constructing the living space which has the same social nature as on ground is human's  Ocean Dream.

The topic of Prof. Wang Jimin's speech was "The comprehensive evaluation of the connectivity level in One Belt One Road area".  He introduced the recent achievements of his group, including the construction of the data analysis platform, the first research report about the five-connective index of "One Belt One Road", and the Marine Awareness Index(MAI) of Chinese citizens.

In the afternoon, a conversation was hosted by Professor Liu Moubin and Dr. Li Jiachun suggested that it was quite important to combine teaching and research. Research is helpful in understanding the relevant knowledge and theories. Dr. Cao Yusong also shared his understanding of numerical simulation process. He pointed out that the process includes optimizing of modes from different accurate parameters, using those modes to conduct physical test, and verify the simulation results. The testing results need to be amended continually to meet the needs of design and manufacture of equipment.

Conversation

In this conversation, lots of questions were asked by students and teachers. When it came to when intelligent ship should come into service, Dr. Zhang Fumin said that the current ships had become intelligent to a great extent, for example, the unmanned engine room could behave normally with or without staff on duty. At the same time, the technology of the addition of fuels also tends to be more intellectualized. In addtition, Dr. Zhang answered questions about vessels in polar region and its nuclear power and he pointed out that it went well and the construction of the shipyard would probably be settled in this year. However, as Antarctic Convention rules that man-made radiation equipment is forbidden in the Antarctic Circle, the nuclear-powered research vessel is unavailable in a short period.

During this "Hongmen Dialogue", scholars also called for attention to the research progress the field of ocean engineering.
