【Yuan Dongliang】Western Pacific Research and International Cooperation

2016-05-27 16:32:58

On May 27, 2016, Yuan Dongliang, the alumni of the Mechanics Department of Peking University and researcher of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, was invited to share the marine research and international cooperation projects in the Western Pacific Ocean. The lecture was chaired by Professor Zheng Mei, Vice Dean of the Institute of Ocean Research, Peking University. The ocean plays an important role in global climate change. The accurate preditions of global climate change is demanding a more comprehensive understanding of the ocean. From a global perspective, the Western Pacific Ocean influence on climate activity is particularly prominent, specifically the Northwest Pacific Ocean circulation and warm pool has an important role on ENSO cycle, the East Asian monsoon and subtropical anticyclone. At present, the research and examination of the Western Pacific Ocean is of great significance to the understanding of climate change and the formulation of China's marine strategy, which has received great attention both at home and abroad.

Yuan Dongliang

In order to deepen the understanding of the study of the Western Pacific Ocean for teachers and students from Peking University, researcher Yuan introduced the content and development status of the international cooperation plan of the Northwest Pacific Ocean Circulation and Climate Experiment (NPOCE). NPOCE is the first large-scale international cooperation investigation and research program launched in China, aiming to observe, simulate and analyze the dynamic mechanism of the Northwest Pacific Ocean Circulation and its role in global and regional climate change.

The oceanographic examination cannot be separated from various advanced instruments and equipment. Based on the experience of ocean expedition, researcher Yuan introduced many wonderful marine survey equipments. He points out that the means of investigation consist of instruments for the measurement of marine hydrological elements and observation carrier platforms, and with the development of science and technology, a large number of remote sensing technologies have been applied to the observation of marine hydrological elements, and gradually form a comprehensive and three-dimensional marine stereo observation system with various technical means, which is of great significance to understand the ocean and master the temporal and spatial changes of various elements.

The lecture was carried out in a relaxed and joyful atmosphere, and the teachers and students actively joined in the question and answer session.
