1. Research Scientist, Geoscience Data Manager

Position Summary:

This position will be based in the Great Basin Center for Geothermal Energy within the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology at the University of Nevada, Reno. The position will be responsible for collecting, compiling, cataloguing, maintaining and publicly-disseminating information related to Nevada’s geothermal resources, including geotechnical reports, well datasets, geological, geophysical and hydrological data, and core samples from geothermal drilling in Nevada.

Position Duties:

• Design, develop, and maintain geothermal databases to store digital geoscientific data for the GBCGE and NBMG;

• Contribute to UNR’s data management responsibilities for the FORGE project;

• Coordinate the systematic digitization of legacy physical collections (reports etc.);

• Systematically update core geothermal datasets, via liaison with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Nevada Division of Minerals (NDOM), and the geothermal industry to obtain new data;

• Develop innovative web-interfaces for effective, reliable delivery of our geoscientific data;

• Assist with the development of seamless, automated data update protocols between the relational databases, and web-delivery systems.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelors or Masters degree in computer science, IT, geology, geophysics, engineering or related field.

• Substantial experience with the management and/or development of relational database management systems using programs such as Microsoft Access and/or Oracle, and SQL (structured query language).

Preferred Qualifications:

• Familiarity with geoscientific datasets (e.g. geological, geochemical, hydrological, well header, and geophysical) and a good understanding of the formats and relevance of such geoscience data.

• Experience with programming languages to support database querying, development of forms, and online data delivery, such as Java, Microsoft Visual Basic, and Python.

• Experience in development of web delivery platforms for scientific and/or geospatial datasets.

• Experience in using ARC-GIS.

Stroud Water Research Center is searching for a stream and river ecosystem ecologist to be hired at the assistant or associate research scientist rank, with expertise in systems approaches to understanding biological, chemical, and hydrodynamic processes in streams, rivers, and their watersheds. 5. Postdoctoral Research Position in Marine Microbial Ecology

The Hamdan Lab at the University of Southern Mississippi seeks a qualified and highly motivated individual for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist position. This position will support research on the effects of oil spills on benthic ecosystems in the Gulf of Mexico. Specifically sought is a Postdoc to investigate the long-term consequences of oil and chemical dispersant exposure on the preservation of 20thcentury historic steel shipwreck in the deep biosphere.

The individual will design and implement ROV deployable seafloor experiments to monitor microbially induced corrosion. Individuals with experience with microbiology and biogeochemistry, with specific knowledge and molecular biological techniques (DNA extraction, amplification, sequencing) are encouraged to apply. Experience and proficiency in bioinformatics and statistical analysis is desired for this position as well as proficiency with analytical chemistry techniques, including hydrocarbon analysis. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in coastal or marine sciences, geomicrobiology, biogeochemistry or similar field. The hire will be encouraged to participate in the planning and execution of oceanographic research onboard USM’s research vessel Point Sur for periods of up to two weeks at sea, and contribute to student mentoring.

6. PhD or MS Graduate Research Assistantship in Marine Microbial Ecology

The Hamdan Lab, in the Division of Coastal Sciences at the University of Southern Mississippi seeks an exceptional student to participate in marine microbial ecology studies in deep-sea habitats. This funded position will support independent research on the effects of oil spills on benthic ecosystems in the Gulf of Mexico. The research assistantship will support (stipend, tuition, benefits) a highly motivated PhD or MS study for up to three years beginning in Fall 2017.

A student is sought to conduct independent research that investigates microbial population structure, metabolic capability, biodiversity and biogeochemistry of benthic environments. This position will involve laboratory studies using molecular biological techniques (DNA extraction, amplification, sequencing), bioinformatics, classical approaches to environmental microbiology (microscopy, metabolic tracers), and analytical chemistry techniques (stable carbon isotope studies, elemental analysis, bulk carbon pool analysis).

7. Research Associate

he Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks a Research Associate to contribute to computational research on marine biogeochemistry along the western Antarctic Peninsula associated with the NSF Palmer Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project. The research associate will work directly with Scott Doney in the Department of Environmental Sciences.

The candidate must have experience with data analysis and visualization. Candidates need strong knowledge of marine biogeochemistry and Antarctic marine ecosystems; prior experience with the Palmer LTER data set is preferred. Strong skills in verbal and written communication of scientific results, ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a member of interdisciplinary teams, and ability to organize, prioritize, and coordinate multiple tasks are required skills.

Appointment is for one year with possibility of a renewal for one additional year, contingent upon satisfactory performance and funding. The completion of a Ph.D. in oceanography or related field is required by appointment start date. The anticipated start date will be in June 2017.

8. Postdoctoral Research Associate

The Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences Program at Princeton University, in association with NOAA’s Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL), seeks a postdoctoral or a more senior scientist to conduct frontier studies on the predictability and genesis mechanisms of severe convective storms over the continental Unites States using available satellite and radar observations to validate a newly-developed global cloud-resolving model (supported by the Next Generation Global Prediction System project) with two-way global-to-regional nested grid capability, with the ultimate goal of transitioning the prediction capability into operational forecasting.

The selected candidate will have a Ph.D. in meteorology, atmospheric sciences, or a related field.
