1. NOAA NHC Visiting Scientist

NOAA and FEMA have a multi-year Inter-agency Agreement (IAA) in place for the NHC to advance the storm surge modeling system, SLOSH, for the purpose of supporting the National Hurricane Program.

Educational Background

Required: M.S. Degree in Physical Oceanography, Meteorology, Civil Engineering, GIS, or closely related field

Desired: PhD in Physical Oceanography, Meteorology, Civil Engineering, GIS, or closely related field

Professional Experience/Training

Required: Strong written and oral communication skills including public speaking, ability to work within a team environment including shared projects/tasking, ability to work within a fast-paced environment associated with land falling tropical cyclones, ability to work on multidisciplinary projects, and strong project/time management skills.

Highly Desired

Experience in tropical cyclone and storm surge forecasting, hydrodynamic modeling, GIS, Unix/Linux experience including shell scripting, programming (Python, Fortran, etc), Matlab/IDL or closely related visualization software, experience working within a supercomputing environment, experience working with remotely sensed data (LIDAR, SONAR, etc), and experience working with bathymetric and topographic data sets.

2. Rock Mechanics & Rock Physics Lab Technician

Position Summary

Under direction of Lab Manager, the ANPERC Rock Mechanics & Rock Physics Lab Technician will help UPERC faculty and research groups conduct standard as well as specialized experiments, measurements, and characterization in all aspects of rock mechanics and rock physics. This Lab Technician will contribute to the development, documentation, and enforcement of a coherent, consistent, continuous, and safe experimental operation in upstream petroleum engineering research at KAUST. This Lab Technician will also help the affiliated UPERC faculty and relevant research scientists to run experiments in our labs in compliance with all required HSSE procedures and existing data management structure.

Major Responsibilities

• Under direction of Lab Manager, assist in the execution of standard as well as specialized experiments in rock mechanics and rock physics.

• Aid in the development of such experiments, applying relevant practical and theoretical knowledge in conducting measurements and recording results.

• Maintain relevant equipment and materials, coordinate service or repair, and ensure a stock of consumable materials and supplies for the equipment.

• Ensure adherence to and compliance with HSSE procedures to maintain a safe operation environment at all times in the laboratory as well as sample preparation areas.

Qualifications

• Prefer the Bachelor of Science/Engineering with demonstrated relevant understanding, knowledge, experience or expertise in rock mechanics, rock physics, or related petroleum engineering disciplines.

• Prefer two or more years in a petroleum, geology, or geosciences research laboratory (academic or industry)

• Master of Science/Engineering would be beneficial

5. Graduate Student Opportunity in Biogeochemistry

The de Graaff lab at Boise State University is seeking a highly motivated PhD student to start in the summer/ fall of 2017. Research in the de Graaff lab broadly focuses on how changes in climate and land-use affect ecosystem processes that drive the global carbon cycle. The student will work on an NSF funded project that aims to understand how soil burial contributes to the persistence of soil organic carbon, and whether exposure to surface conditions can trigger the decomposition of ancient carbon. Understanding the source of organic carbon in deep soil horizons and the processes influencing its turnover is critical for predicting the response of this large carbon reservoir to environmental change and feedbacks to climate.

7. PhD opportunities in sediment connectivity research

Two PhD students, one to be based at Montana State University (MSU) in Bozeman, and one to be based at University of Montana (UM) in Missoula, are sought to participate in a research project investigating the influences of topography and vegetation on sediment transfer, residence time, and connectivity between hillslopes, streams, and downstream through river networks. Semiarid, snowmelt-dominated, fire-prone landscapes in Montana will be targeted. Measurements of erosion and sediment transport at different scales, using isotopic and physical tracers, will be combined with high-resolution topographic data and modeling of sediment storage, mixing, and routing. The project will fill knowledge gaps surrounding multi-scale erosion rates and processes in mountain landscapes by bridging hillslope and fluvial analyses, combining diverse and cutting-edge tools, and incorporating ecogeomorphic perspectives about the influence of vegetation on sediment transfer.

8. Research Support Specialist III - SPIF Data Manager/GIS Specialist

The Cornell Center for Atmospheric and Planetary Science seeks candidates with GIS experience to fill our Spacecraft Planetary Imaging Facility, (SPIF) Data Manager’s/GIS Specialist position.
