PhD scholarships at the National Marine Science Centre, Southern Cross University, Australia

Up to three PhD scholarships are available to work with Prof. Isaac Santos at the National Marine Science Centre (NMSC), Southern Cross University, Australia. Each scholarship will include an annual stipend of AU$ 27,082 (tax free) plus tuition and fee waivers. The PhD candidate will work full-time on one of the following fully funded projects:

Project 1: Attenuation of coastal groundwater pollution. The student will use a combination of laboratory experiments (sand tanks), field observations, and modelling to better understand the role of subterranean estuaries in modifying pollutant fluxes from groundwater to coastal waters.

Project 2: Influence of land use on estuarine water quality. The student will collaborate with government agencies to investigate how intensive horticulture modifies water chemistry and groundwater-surface water connectivity in estuaries. The project will also involve working with high school students to investigate water quality in estuaries.

Project 3: Resolving the relative contribution of fresh versus saline submarine groundwater discharge. The student will use a combination of geochemical tracers such as radon, radium isotopes, and water isotopes as well as modelling to quantify submarine groundwater discharge into iconic Australian waterways, and separate different hydrological pathways.

5. Data Assimilation Intern

The Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA) at Colorado State University (CSU) seeks to fill 2-3 internship positions as part of a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) award intended to increase the number of experts in the field of data assimilation. The internships, two located at CIRA in Fort Collins, Colorado, and one located at the Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) in Boulder, CO, will have a duration of one year and will cover both theoretical and practical training. The individuals in these positions will be members of the CIRA Data Assimilation group and will learn how to use several models and cutting-edge data assimilation techniques used operationally at NOAA. Specifically, each intern will begin training by learning the basic theory and applications of data assimilation through supervised instruction and hands-on practice. After the initial training period, each intern will use his/her knowledge to work on applied, NOAA-sponsored, relevant data assimilation problems that are jointly selected by a NOAA Lab and the intern.

Required Qualifications:

· must be eligible to work in the US by proposed start date because CIRA will not sponsor a visa for this position;

· Master’s Degree or Ph.D. in Meteorology, Oceanography, Hydrology, or related physical science discipline, such as Applied Mathematics and Engineering. Degree must be conferred prior to the start date

· ability to pass a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI, federal background check);

· ability to travel to visit relevant NOAA labs and attend domestic meetings and workshops;

· higher education in fundamental physics and/or mathematics;

· coding/Programming experience.

·

Preferred Qualifications:

· knowledge of numerical analysis methods;

· knowledge of retrievals and satellite data;

· knowledge of numerical modeling;

· experience with high-end computing;

· experience with scientific programming languages;

· experience with Fortran 90;

· interest in NOAA-focused research;

· ability to work as part of a research development team.

6. Professor of Atmosphere Ocean Science and Mathematics (open rank, tenured/tenure track)

The Center for Atmosphere Ocean Science (CAOS), a unit of the Department of Mathematics within the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University, seeks candidates for an open rank faculty position, anticipated to begin in September 2018. Appointments may be made at either a junior or senior level. The CAOS group focuses on the intersection between applied mathematics and atmosphere ocean science (including the cryosphere), and hosts a distinct interdisciplinary PhD program within the Courant Institute. The ideal candidate will leverage existing strengths of the Courant Institute in applied mathematics to atmosphere-ocean-climate research. A research focus in multi-scale dynamics, high-performance simulation, or physical oceanography would be especially attractive, but exceptional candidates from any relevant area will be considered.
