1. 2018 POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

Applications for the postdoctoral fellowship program at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) are currently being accepted. MBARI is dedicated to the development of state-of-the-art instrumentation, systems, and methods supporting scientific research in the oceans. Ongoing programs at MBARI span marine robotics, ocean physics, chemistry, geology, and biology as well as research and development related to information management and ocean instrumentation. Located in Moss Landing, California at the head of Monterey Canyon, MBARI enjoys convenient access to a diverse range of ocean environments. The institute operates two ocean-going research ships, a coastal workboat, remotely operated vehicles, autonomous underwater and surface vehicles, oceanographic profilers and moorings, the MARS seafloor cabled observatory, and a wide range of oceanographic equipment. MBARI is a non-profit oceanographic research institute supported by the David and Lucile Packard Foundation.

Offers will be made to candidates from the fields of biological, chemical, and physical oceanography; marine geology; and ocean engineering. Candidates must be awarded the Ph.D. degree prior to commencing the two-year appointment and must begin work in 2019. Applicants are encouraged to communicate with potential research sponsors at MBARI (http://www.mbari.org/science-and-engineering-mentors/) for guidance on project feasibility, relevance to ongoing research projects, and resource availability.

2. Postdoctoral Fellowship - Geochemistry and Petrology of Extraterrestrial Materials

The Lunar and Planetary Institute (LPI), part of the Universities Space Research Association, invites applications for a postdoctoral fellowship in the area of geochemistry and petrology of extraterrestrial materials.

The successful candidate will work as part of a team of planetary scientists at NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, on a project funded by NASA to investigate the effect of shock on H mobility in nominally anhydrous minerals and apatite. The work will involve impact shock experiments on geological materials, and their analysis by a variety of in-situ techniques. Candidates with a strong background in petrology and/or geochemistry, and preferably experience with H analysis by FTIR and/or SIMS and/or shock effects in minerals and meteorites, are encouraged to apply.

3. PhD and MSc positions at University of Alberta, Links between land management and water quality

The Catchment and Wetland Sciences group (caws.ualberta.ca), led by Dr David Olefeldt, studies impacts of disturbances and land management practices on catchment and wetland functions. We have a strong focus on northern peatlands and peatland-rich catchments, with current research conducted on the Boreal and Taiga Plains of western Canada. Here we study topics related to greenhouse gas fluxes, water quality, soil biogeochemistry, terrestrial-aquatic linkages, hydrogeology, permafrost thaw, wildfire, thermokarst, and soil carbon storage.

We are currently looking for two (2) new graduate students at either PhD or MSc level to join our group for the summer of 2018, to carry out research with focus on linkages between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems in northern Alberta, and how these linkages influence downstream water quality. A background in physical hydrology, biogeochemistry, and/or organic chemistry is an advantage. Specific research topics include impacts of forest disturbances and management on terrestrial export of dissolved organic matter, photochemistry of terrestrially derived dissolved organic matter, and links between chemical characteristics of dissolved organic matter and water treatability. Both positions will encompass significant field and lab components to the research.

4. Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Planetary Science at the California Institute of Technology

The Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences at the California Institute of Technology is seeking outstanding applicants for a tenure-track faculty position in planetary science at the assistant professor level. We are especially interested in individuals whose research complements that in the Division, which covers the full spectrum of the earth and planetary sciences. We are particularly interested in applicants with solar system-focused research programs in planetary geophysics/geology, planetary atmospheric sciences, or small bodies research; but those in other sub-disciplines will be considered.

The initial appointment at the assistant professor level is contingent upon completion of a PhD in a relevant field. Interested applicants should submit an electronic application, which includes a curriculum vitae that includes a list of publications, a statement of proposed research activities, a brief teaching statement, 2-3 select first-author publications (optional), and names and emails of three references. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled and reviews are anticipated to begin on March 16, 2018.

5. Visiting Assistant Professor of Geology and Environmental Geosciences

The Department of Geology and Environmental Geosciences at Bucknell University, Lewisburg, PA, invites applications for an entry-level, visiting assistant professor in Geology; Ph.D. or ABD required. The position is for the fall semester 2018 and spring semester 2019. Qualified applicants for this visiting position will have no more than four years of full-time postdoctoral teaching experience at the time of appointment. We seek applicants with a demonstrated ability to successfully work with a diverse student body. Familiarity with Appalachian geology is desirable.

The visiting professor will teach two Physical & Environmental Geology lecture sections and two accompanying lab sections in fall 2018 and teach two Evolution of the Earth lecture sections and two accompanying lab sections in spring 2019. Both courses are taught at the introductory level and serves both majors and non-majors. Each section is capped at 24 students.

The Geology Department offers B.A. and B.S. degrees in Geology and Environmental Geosciences. Bucknell's geology program is field intensive and we expect candidates to make use of local Appalachian field opportunities for labs in the courses.

6. Postdoctoral Scholar in Mars Atmospheric Structure, Dynamics, and Aerosols

The California Institute of Technology (Caltech), Postdoctoral Scholars Program at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) invites applications for a postdoctoral research position in JPL's Planetary and Exoplanetary Atmospheres Group (Requisition ID 2018-9117).Dr. Armin Kleinboehlof JPL's Science Division will serve as postdoctoral advisor to the selected candidate. The appointee will carry out research in collaboration with the JPL advisor and the MCS team, resulting in publications in the open literature.

The research will involve analysis and modeling of data collected by the Mars Climate Sounder (MCS) instrument on board the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) spacecraft. MCS is an advanced limb-sounding infrared radiometer that collects data in one visible and 8 infrared channels to characterize Mars’ atmospheric temperature structure and dust and ice distribution with unprecedented vertical resolution. MCS has been collecting data at Mars since September 2006, providing a near-continuous meteorological data set for over 5 Mars years. The successful candidate(s) will work with Level 1B data (measured radiance profiles) and/or Level 2 data (retrieved profiles of atmospheric parameters). Study topics may include the structure of the aphelion cloud belt and its relation to atmospheric dynamics, the distribution and properties of mesospheric clouds, and the distribution of water ice and CO2 ice in the polar regions.
