3. Research Associate (Post-Doc)

The Ocean Physics Department (OPD) in Applied Physics Laboratory at the University of Washington (APL-UW) is seeking Post-doctoral Research Associates with research interests in upper ocean mixing processes and turbulence. This is a full-time (100% FTE) appointment, with an expected term of up to 36 months subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

The Research Associate will work with an observational and modeling team to conduct and analyze a detailed observational study of mixing processes at the base of the upper ocean boundary layer during Fall 2018. Skills in oceanographic data analysis, ocean dynamics and mixing processes are desirable. Successful applicants must hold a recent (no more than 4-years) PhD or foreign equivalent in order to assume a post-doctoral position.

A transition to permanent staff following the completion of the post-doc appointment is possible subject to availability of funds and the demonstration of an interest in developing independent research initiatives during the course of the post-doc appointment. Opportunities to collaborate with scientists across APL and the UW campus provide access to a broad range of expertise both during the post-doctoral research and as a permanent member of the staff.

APL-UW serves society by contributing new knowledge and technology to the national defense enterprise, industry, public policy makers, and academia. The Laboratory’s broad and deep experience in undersea science and technology is a significant reason why APL-UW is one of only five Department of Defense-designated University Affiliated Research Centers (UARCs) having long-term, large-scale, formal connections to the U.S. Navy.

All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research and service.

The University of Washington is located in the greater Seattle metropolitan area, with a dynamic, multicultural community of 3.7 million people and a range of ecosystems from mountains to ocean. The University serves a diverse population of 80,000 students, faculty and staff, including 25% first-generation college students, over 25% Pell Grant students, and faculty from over 70 countries. The University promotes diversity and inclusivity among our students, faculty, and staff and the public; we seek applicants who are committed to these principles. Thus, we are strongly seeking applicants whose research, teaching, and/or service have not only prepared them to fulfill our commitment to inclusion, but have also given them the confidence to fully engage audiences in higher education from a wide spectrum of backgrounds.

4. Earth Science Deputy Division Chief

Do you have a strong desire to lead, inspire and develop people? Do you want your career to leave an enduring impact on others? Do you have a passion for exploration? If you answered yes, we want you! At NASA, the key to our success is our people. We recognize the vital role that supervisors play to empower our diverse workforce to achieve our shared goals. At NASA, supervisors must have a unique combination of technical competence, individual energy, and the ability to connect with and motivate others. In return, we offer a range of missions and people to support, where you’ll have the opportunity to contribute to work that matters while helping us create and sustain an environment that fosters connection, engagement, teamwork and innovation. Together, we are part of something bigger than ourselves.

The Earth Science Division at Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley is a dedicated and innovative team of about 100 scientists, engineers, and project managers that conduct observations and perform modeling and analysis in support of the NASA Science Mission Directorate. The Division includes globally recognized leaders in airborne science and field campaign management, instrument development, ecosystem and atmospheric modeling and analysis, and applications for societal benefit. Earth system science research at Ames is the foundation for the Division’s leadership in new capabilities, such as high-performance computing and machine learning for large-scale Earth observation studies, unmanned aircraft systems, and small satellites. The Division’s scientists use airborne and satellite-based observations and process models to address hypothesis-driven science objectives with core areas of expertise including carbon cycle and coastal/ocean ecosystems, biogeochemical cycling, atmospheric chemistry and dynamics.

6. ProgramSpecialist III - Climate Monitoring

Job Overview

This position provides the necessary focal point between the NOAA Ocean and Climate Monitoring program of the Ocean Observing and Monitoring Division (OOMD) and the federal and extramural, scientific community. The ocean and climate monitoring component focuses on the development and improvement of ocean- and climate- related data sets, the transformation of ocean- and climate- -related observations into authoritative products, and the interpretation of these products to better understand the current and changing state of the, ocean, and Arctic and climate systems.

Responsibilities

Observations are a foundational element of the oceans and climate research and services enterprise. The scientific community invests significantly in the development of global observing systems to address the needs of the research, forecasting, and assessment communities, to enable stakeholders and decision-makers to monitor and respond to changes in the Earth system. While observing systems routinely provide data and related metadata, raw data alone are often insufficient to realize the full value of these observations. Value-added products, diagnostics, and indices based on these observations should have a strong scientific foundation, be publicly accessible, and enhance the use of the data to address specific needs.
