We are looking for highly motivated students to take up two PhD positions in the projects CHAR and RAWFILL.
In RAWFILL, the PhD (3 years) will use and develop geophysical methods for landfill mining initiatives on sites located in Belgium and France with advanced geophysical methods and guided sampling. It is supervised by Professor F. Nguyen and is in close collaboration with the British Geological Survey.
In CHAR, the PhD (4 years) will use and develop geophysical methods to assess the spatio-temporal patterns of soil hydraulic properties and root water uptake and their relationship to charcoal enrichment (supervised by Prs. F. Nguyen and S. Garré, in Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech Campus).
Profile: a MSc degree or equivalent in geophysics, physics, soil or geo science, engineering, or related discipline. A strong background in physics or geophysics, applied mathematics, and numerical methods is an asset

What You Will Do:

What is Required:
• Ph.D. or equivalent experience in rock mechanics, geology, hydrogeology or related field.
• Extensive experience in geology, rock mechanics, and hydrogeology, including geological mapping, field data collection and analysis, and numerical modeling.
• Advanced skills in applications of numerical models such a TOUGH-family codes to simulate interactions of fluid flow, temperature and geomechanical stresses.
• Documented ability to publish research results in scientific journals.
• Ability to lift 10-20 lbs; climbing or balancing on ladders/scaffolding.
• Ability to walk into difficult terrain and underground mines for field data collection and installation of field monitoring equipment.
