1. Assistant Professor Tenure Track of Earth System Science

The Faculty of Science at the University of Zurich invites applications for an Assistant Professor Tenure Track of Earth System Science in order to join our team of experts of the University Research Priority Program on “Global Change and Biodiversity” co-hosted at the Department of Geography.

We seek innovative applicants with a strong record in research and teaching, who will strengthen our expertise in Earth System Science. Applicants with interests in interdisciplinary research between and amongst the Earth’s spheres focusing on theory, experiments, observations, or modeling to assess different interaction and feedback mechanisms on global change drivers (including climate change and human dimensions) are encouraged to apply. 2. Program Officer

Summary

The Program Officer (PO) works in close collaboration with the Senior Director of Operations, the Database Manager, and the Senior Director of the “Our Changing Planet” lens, with the primary responsibility of administrating and developing the innovative grant making for the Changing Planet lens.

Responsibilities

1. Reviews requests for funding within the Changing Planet lens. Identifies qualified requests based on eligibility, timeliness, project plan accuracy, viability of methodology, currency and significance of the topic, and relevance to the priorities of the lens (25%)

2. Provides feedback to potential and repeat applicants before grant proposal submission, including improvements for project planning and design. Provides technical and specific support to grantees during all phases of grant-making process and project implementation (25%)

3. Promotes grantees through all NGS/NGP departments by notifying them of new grants and highlighting projects with good media potential. Draws on expertise to provide scientific context to interested media units. Communicates with grantees to identify story/media opportunities and stays apprised of new discoveries, high profile academic publications, and/or media-friendly results. Serves as point of contact or liaison between grantees and NG media units, and tracks media coverage of grantees (25%)

4. Recruits potential explorers and projects through domestic and international professional conferences, meetings, special events, and site visits (10%)

5. Supports Lens Lead (Senior Director) of the Changing Planet lens on designing strategic priorities, planning of new initiatives, and adaptively managing overall mission and metrics of grant portfolio (5%)

6. From the grantee pool, works with Lens Lead to identify potential projects to scale up, especially those that align within the lens’ current strategic framework (5%)

7. Provides scientific support to management team through the pipeline for scale projects related to the Changing Planet lens (5%)

4. Faculty Position – Earthquake Geologist

The Earth Observatory of Singapore and the Asian School of the Environment at Nanyang Technological University seek a geologist whose focus has been the application of modern stratigraphic, geomorphologic and structural methods to understand earthquakes and related phenomena. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate closely with geochronologists, seismologists, and geodesists at the Observatory. Demonstration of a strong interest in the earthquake geology of Southeast Asia will be essential. 7. Student Assistantship in Agroclimatology

The Agroclimatology Group in the Department of Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences at Auburn University is seeking several highly-motivated graduate students (PhD or Master). The successful candidate will have the opportunity to design and conduct agroclimatology research in one or more of the following areas:

1) use of climate forecasts to improve crop, water, and nutrient management;

2) assessing impacts of climate change and variability on agricultural systems and food security;

3) improving crop and/or hydrologic forecasting and modeling using climate and remote sensing information. The new student will be expected to conduct research, assist teaching, present in national or international conferences, and publish in peer-reviewed scientific journals. A competitive stipend and tuition waiver will be provided to qualified candidates.

Qualifications

1. Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a science or engineering discipline related to climate, such as agronomy or agricultural engineering, environmental science or engineering, climatology, meteorology, hydrology, or a closely related field

2. Commitment to a successful career in either academia or industry and strong interests in agroclimatology and modeling

3. Strong communication skills (both verbal and written)

4. Computing expertise (such as R, Matlab, or Python) and experience with climate data analysis, crop modeling, and/or hydrologic modeling are preferred but not required
