Postdoctoral or more senior appointments are initially for one year with the possibility of renewal for a second year based on satisfactory performance and continued funding. A competitive salary is offered commensurate with experience and qualifications.

We seek applications in all areas of the climate sciences. This includes research in basic processes in atmospheric and oceanic dynamics; climate dynamics, variability and prediction; atmospheric physics and chemistry; cloud dynamics and convection; boundary layer processes; land-sea-ice dynamics; continental hydrology and land processes; physical oceanography; ocean-atmosphere interaction; climate diagnostics and analysis. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline.

5. Ocean Sciences: Physical Oceanography, Assistant Professor (Open until filled; initial review

The Ocean Sciences Department of the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Physical Oceanography. We seek a physical oceanographer with a research focus on physical processes within the ocean and ocean dynamics. Preferred areas of interest include modeling of coastal problems such as coastal upwelling, cross-shelf transport, shelf/slope exchange, and eastern boundary current processes, although candidates with a broader range of interests will also be considered. Experience with and interest in interdisciplinary problems such as physical influences on ocean biology, biogeochemistry or fisheries, on event or climate-related time-scales, is desirable. This position is part of a cluster hire in support of the new Environmental Sciences undergraduate program at UCSC and our growing interdisciplinary research focus on coastal science and policy. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain a vigorous research program that complements existing activities within the department. Candidates must be seriously committed to teaching general ocean sciences courses as well as specialty courses in their field of expertise. Teaching responsibilities will require this individual to have considerable breadth in physical oceanography. We are especially interested in applicants who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the UCSC academic community through research, teaching, and/or service.

7. 2 PhD student openings at the University of Rochester (USA)

The Ice Core Lab at the University of Rochester has an opening for a PhD student. Our work uses ice cores from Greenland and Antarctica to study past environmental change, with the goal of better understanding the Earth’s natural climate system. We regularly conduct ice core drilling expeditions in the polar regions, working both in the extreme frozen interiors of the major ice sheets as well as on their picturesque margins.

Some examples of the Ice Core Lab’s current and possible future research projects:

1) Understanding past changes in atmospheric methane (a powerful greenhouse gas) during natural climate warming events

2) Using carbon-14 produced by cosmic rays in glacial ice to understand past changes in cosmic ray bombardment intensity and related changes in solar activity

3) Using ice core measurements of carbon monoxide and its isotopes to understand past changes in the chemical reactivity of the global atmosphere
