Research Engineering Technician – Bioengineering Lab

MBARI’s Bioengineering Lab seeks a Research Engineering Technician for a program focused on deep sea instrumentation and bio-inspired design. The candidate must have a background in a STEM field and demonstrable programming skills (e.g., MATLAB or Python) in data analysis. The candidate will be working as part of a multidisciplinary team with other scientists and engineers developing tools and techniques for studying movement and ecology of marine organisms. Excellent organization and planning skills, experience working in the field or at sea, and demonstrated skills in scientific writing are highly desirable. The position will involve data analysis (e.g., image processing, segmentation, object and landmark tracking), laboratory (e.g., 3D imaging, particle image velocimetry, small-scale robotics), and field work (e.g., ROVs, AUVs), with opportunities to advance over time.

A Master’s degree or higher in a STEM field or equivalent experience is required. Experience with publishing scientific papers is desirable. The candidate must be able to work with diverse groups of people. The position may include occasional, long (approx. 1 month) oceanographic cruises, travel to distant and remote locales, as well as scientific meetings. The earliest start date is January 1, 2018.

2.Assistant Professor –Watershed Science/Soil Physics

The position is 60% teaching and 40% research. Teaching should include four undergraduate courses annually on topics related to watershed science, including urban soil and water systems, sustainable land management, and soil and water quality. Research should focus on watershed-scale management of soil and water resources. Of particular interest are the integration of theoretical and applied approaches to explore the complex physical, chemical, and biological processes associated with coupled hydrologic and biogeochemical cycles, and interactions between the soil zone, the biosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere. Specific applications and methodological approaches of interest include 1) interfaces between natural and managed landscapes, 2) emphasis on vadose zone hydrology and/or solute transport at a range of spatial and temporal scales, 3) and integration of landscape-scale remote sensing data with quantitative modeling. Research applications may be in a range of ecosystems as related to plant productivity, water quality and quality, water use efficiency, greenhouse gas emissions, and climate change.

4.Tenure-track Faculty Position in Sedimentary Geology

The Department of Geological Sciences in the Jackson School of Geosciences at The University of Texas at Austin is seeking a tenure-track faculty member at the Assistant Professor level in Sedimentary Geology. 5. Postdoctoral Fellow Theoretical and Applied Data Assimilation Scientist

The Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA) at Colorado State University seeks to fill a postdoctoral fellowship as part of a National Science Foundation (NSF) award to be located at CIRA in Fort Collins, Colorado. This fellowship may last up to 3 years contingent upon NSF funding availability. The individual in this position will be part of the data assimilation group and will work on developing links between non-Gaussian distributions and different atmospheric scale dynamics, converting the hybrid version of WRF-GSI to have a non-Gaussian component, as well as developing and implementing different probability density functions detection algorithms.

Essential Job Duties:

Non-Gaussian Dynamical Linkages 40%

· develop mathematical and/or stochastical model to link probability density functions to different atmospheric dynamics;

· implement and test the new model with toy problems;

· implement and test the new model with the WRF test cases.

Non-Gaussian Hybrid WRF-GSI 40%

· convert the Weather, Research, and Forecasting Gridpoint Statistical Interpolation (GSI) and the hybrid system to allow for a lognormal component (e.g., for the moisture variable) as well as a version with the logarithmic transform approach;

· test and compare the different versions of the WRF-GSI against different distributed error scenarios;

· conduct WRF-GSI experiments to assess the impacts on short and medium range forecasts from the different configurations of the hybrid WRF-GSI system.

Dissemination of Research Results 20%

· prepare manuscripts for submission to peer review journals and edit through the review process;

· prepare and present conference abstracts, posters, and/or presentations;

· travel to domestic and international conferences.

Required Qualifications:

· PhD by the start date in Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Remote Sensing, Meteorology, or related physical science field plus 1 year of experience working with data assimilation systems;

· higher education in fundamental physics and/or mathematics;

· experience programming in Fortran90 or higher and Linux scripting;

6. Lecturer Position in Environmental Engineering

The University of Michigan’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering invites applications for a non-tenure-track Lecturer position in Environmental Engineering. With the recent introduction of an ABET accredited undergraduate environmental engineering program and a series of new Masters of Engineering (MEng) degrees, the department’s enrollments are rising, and expected to continue to do so over the next several years.

General Duties: The selected individual will hold the title of Lecturer and will teach high-enrollment undergraduate and graduate classes in Environmental Engineering. It is anticipated that the individual will be responsible for two courses each semester. 7.Postdoctoral Research Associate in Flood Resilience

The Consortium of Universities for the Advance of Hydrologic Science, Inc. (CUAHSI) seeks candidates for one postdoctoral position in the general area of improving community resilience from flood disasters. The Postdoctoral Research Associate (RA) will conduct independent research, but is mentored by one or more faculty at the university of the RA’s choosing.

11. Texaco Postdoctoral Fellowship

The California Institute of Technology will offer a fellowship in Geological and Planetary Sciences that is available each academic year. The Texaco Postdoctoral Fellowship is an award funded by endowments from the Texaco Philanthropic Foundation. The fellowship carries an annual stipend of $62,000 plus a research expense fund of $5,000 and one-way travel costs to Pasadena.
