1. Postdoctoral Research Associate, Environmental Sciences/Ecological Research

Postdoctoral Research Associate – University of Virginia

The Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on the remote sensing of vegetation photosynthesis from multiple spatial scales. The successful candidate will be working on leaf to canopy level measurements of solar-induced fluorescence (SIF) and its linkage to plant photosynthesis. The postdoc will measure SIF using field spectrometers, drones, and airborne remote sensing.

A Ph.D. in plant physiology, ecology, earth system science, remote sensing, or a related field is required. Knowledge of recent development of SIF and experience with leaf gas exchange measurements will be preferred. Knowledge of one or more advanced computer programming languages is required, including Matlab or R. The successful candidate should be enthusiastic, creative, and highly motivated. Strong skills in verbal and written communication of scientific results, ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a member of interdisciplinary teams, and ability to organize, prioritize, and coordinate multiple tasks are critical skills.

Appointment is for one year with possibility of a renewal for one additional year, contingent upon satisfactory performance and funding. The completion of a Ph.D. in earth system sciences or related field is required by appointment start date. The anticipated start date will be in late Jun-Jul, 2017.

2. Assistant Professor in Climate Change and Remote Sensing

The Department of Geography and the Environment invites applications for a tenure-track position at the assistant professor level to begin August 2018. We seek a candidate with a strong commitment to high quality research and undergraduate education and primary expertise in climate change science with specialization in remote sensing.

Applicants with an African focus are especially encouraged to apply; however, we welcome applications from any national and/or international areas of focus. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Geography or a related field, must be academically qualified to teach, and must meet all other position requirements at the time of selection. The position involves teaching courses in remote sensing and climate change and contributing to the department’s core curriculum in physical geography. The department’s spatial analysis laboratory includes a full suite of geographic information systems and remote sensing hardware and software. In joining the department, the applicant would contribute to an active, student-centered learning environment with ongoing collaborations throughout campus and the community. Excellent opportunities exist for interdisciplinary research and to work with faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds. The position would be joint-appointed in the Environmental Studies Program.

3. Ph.D. Graduate Research Assistant: Hydrogeochemistry

The Interdisciplinary Hydrology Laboratory (http://www.forh2o.net/) at West Virginia University invites applications for a Ph.D. graduate research assistant who will conduct research investigating surface water chemical characteristics and geology in mixed-land-use watersheds of the Appalachian region of the United States. West Virginia University is the state’s flagship research-one institution, and is among the top universities in the nation, with demonstrated excellence in teaching and research.

Start date will be fall semester (August 16th) 2017. Primary duties include water flow and water chemistry monitoring with additional responsibilities including field work, stream cross sections, instrument maintenance, data collection, processing, analyses and modeling, coursework, dissertation, and multiple publications.

Applicants must possess bachelors and master’s degrees completed in natural resources, ecology, environmental sciences, physical hydrology, water quality, or a closely related field. 4. Postdoctoral Research Fellow position in Global Internal Tide/Wave Modeling

A postdoctoral research fellow is sought for a collaborative project between the University of Michigan, University of Southern Mississippi, Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), and NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), on global high-resolution simulations of internal tides and waves. The successful applicant will examine internal tides and waves in US Navy and NASA global models. Topics of specific interest include the predictability of internal tides and waves, the signature of internal tides and waves on sea surface height, comparison of model results to in-situ observations, and the application of global models for present-generation nadir satellite altimetry and next-generation swath altimetry missions. The project represents an opportunity for an early-career scientist to analyze cutting edge high resolution ocean models run on the nation's largest supercomputers.

5. Data Analyst

Climate Central is seeking a self-motivated data analyst to join a team investigating climate change impacts in the U.S. They will work closely with our team of scientists, analysts, and creative artists to produce a series of original, newsworthy and influential analyses and reports.

Responsibilities

• Identify, obtain, and analyze large climate and weather data sets and other primary data relevant to climate change from government and other sources.

• Be a key member of a team of scientists, journalists, and graphics designers that produce regular climate change analyses, content, and data visualizations for TV, print, and digital media outlets.

• Recognize and develop interesting scientific findings and story lines that can be translated into reports and visuals.

• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Degree in statistics, computer science, environmental science or related field, or equivalent experience.

• 3 years of research and quantitative analysis experience.

• A demonstrated talent for creative analysis and clear presentation of interesting, innovative findings from complex data sets.

• Fluency with basic software (for example, but not limited to, R, Matlab) and an ability to learn new ones.

7. Geochemistry Laboratory Manager - Class 100 Clean Lab supporting TIMS & ICP-MS

The Department of Geological Sciences in the Jackson School of Geosciences at The University of Texas at Austin seeks a Geochemistry Laboratory Manager responsible for a class 100 clean chemistry lab and support of associated thermal ionization mass spectrometer (TIMS) and multi-collector inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometer (MC-ICP-MS) instruments.

Candidates must have a Master's degree in Earth or physical sciences and five years of experience with TIMS or MC-ICP-MS and clean work. Successful applicants must have strong analytical skills and experience with developing methods for mass spectrometry; data reduction for radiogenic and stable isotope analysis; and applications to Earth Science programs.

Responsibilities include: analyzing rock, mineral, soil, and water samples; developing new analytical capabilities and clean lab procedures; maintaining and troubleshooting existing instrumentation and facilities; training new users, managing students conducting research in the lab, and assisting other users; seeking new collaborations and contract work for the facility; and managing lab scheduling, invoices, income, and expenditures. 8. Research Oceanographer

The Ocean Ecology Laboratory at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center seeks a scientist with expertise in coupled global and regional physical-biogeochemical modeling and a strong interest in the assimilation of satellite ocean color products into these models. The individual will pursue hypothesis-driven research and will extend model capabilities through assimilation of satellite-derived ocean color products beyond the traditional chlorophyll retrievals.
