2. PhD Research Assistantship in Hydrology

The Catchment Hydrology and Spatial Analysis lab at the University of California Riverside (UCR) led by Dr. Hoori Ajami (http://www.hooriajami.ucr.edu/), invites applications from prospective PhD students interested in pursuing research in Catchment scale hydrologic modeling in the Department of Environmental Sciences (http://envisci.ucr.edu/). The focus of the projects are on 1) understanding surface water-groundwater interactions at large catchment scale in California using the integrated groundwater-land surface model (ParFlow.CLM), and 2) developing computationally efficient modeling approaches for large scale catchment simulations using the newly developed Soil Moisture and Runoff simulation Toolkit (SMART).

Funding is available for 2 graduate student positions in the form of research and teaching assistantships starting in Fall 2017. Applicants must hold a BS degree in Hydrology, Environmental Sciences/Civil Engineering or related disciplines, and have strong quantitative skills and excellent oral and written communication skills. Previous experience in hydrologic modeling, computer programming and GIS are preferred. For consideration, please send a Curriculum Vitae, a personal statement (1−2 pages) describing your previous research experience and future research interests, unofficial transcripts, GRE score, and contact information of 3 referees to Dr. Hoori Ajami (hoori.ajami@ucr.edu). Review of applications will start immediately and continue until the positions are filled.

4. Postdoctoral Opportunity in Stream Restoration

The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) has an immediate opening for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to study the effects of stream restoration on removal of nutrients and suspended sediments from stream water. The restoration approach, Regenerative Stormwater Conveyance (RSC), involves filling deeply eroded stream channels with a mixture of sand and organic matter and placing rock weirs across the stream channel at intervals to create a series of pools. The Postdoctoral Fellow will investigate the effects of three RSCs by assisting with the ongoing research and with synthesizing data on nitrogen and phosphorus fluxes through the RSCs.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in environmental science or engineering, peer-reviewed publications, and professional presentations. Applicants should also have knowledge of hydrology and the biogeochemistry of N and P. Skills in data management, analysis and modeling, as well as analytical chemistry and the use of automated systems for in situ sensing and water sampling would also be desirable.
