4. Marine Applications Competence Area Manager (VN18 29)

Details:

EUMETSAT is Europe’s meteorological satellite agency. Bringing together the resources of 30 member states, we observe the atmosphere and oceans from space using a system of satellites 365 days a year. Our data is vital for weather forecasts that help to protect lives and property, as well as monitoring the environment and our changing climate.

Our Marine Applications Competence Area (MA-CA) is responsible for the scientific development, maintenance, validation and quality monitoring of marine and ocean products extracted from satellite instrument chains. This influential role, Martine Applications Competence Area Manager, provides a great opportunity for an established remote sensing expert to manage the MA-CA team and its resources and to lead the development of the scientific knowledge required to support the exploitation and evolution of EUMETSAT and Copernicus instrument chains.

The ideal candidate is an experienced scientist who is an expert in the remote sensing and processing of data from relevant space-bourne marine remote sensing missions, preferably in an operational 24/7 environment. With experience of calibrating marine remote sensing instruments, developing and coding operational remote sensing software, you can initiate and lead relevant scientific studies. You must be a team player, with the ability to collaborate with your colleagues and our international partners. You must have strong analytical skills, with the ability to convey complex concepts to our user communities. Experience of writing scientific and technical documents is an advantage, along with a familiarity of the Copernicus Programme.

5. PhD student - Modeling Microbial Degradation in Soil

Projekt:

Predicting the fate of organic chemicals in natural soils is challenged by the complex interplay between the properties of the chemicals and the high spatio-temporal variability of environmental conditions in soils. This project will meet this challenge by using an advanced numerical reactive transport modeling approach to determine the influence of soil matrix properties on the microbial degradation of organic chemicals.

Your tasks:

• expanding a pore-scale model to address the specific project questions

• applying the expanded model for the simulation of the fate of bioreactive chemicals in heterogeneous soil systems

• determining the governing factors controlling effective in-situ biodegradation rates in soils

Your profile:

• Master of Science or equivalent degree in a relevant natural science or engineering subject

• Strong background in computational science

• Knowledge on computational fluid dynamics, subsurface transport processes, soil science, biogeochemistry and/or microbiology is beneficial

• Good English and communication skills

We offer:

• Top level interdisciplinary research at a research centre which enjoys an excellent reputation within Germany as well as internationally

• Excellent technical facilities

• Work in inter-disciplinary and multinational teams

• Excellent links to national and international research networks
