1.Assistant Professor (Tenure Track), Mineralogy and Geochemistry—Dartmouth College

The Department of Earth Sciences at Dartmouth College invites applications for a tenure- track assistant professor of mineralogy and geochemistry. Particular attention will be given to candidates with research interests in applied mineralogy related to mineral-microbe or water- rock interactions. We are especially interested in candidates who focus on understanding fundamental processes through a state-of-the-art field and laboratory research program that provides synergy with existing research activities within the department and elsewhere at Dartmouth, including the Department’s core research areas: earth and planetary evolution, surface processes, and ice and climate systems. The successful candidate will continue Dartmouth's strong traditions in graduate and undergraduate research and teaching. Teaching responsibilities consist of three courses spread over four ten-week terms. One or more of these courses will have a core focus on the fundamentals of mineralogy.

2.Assistant Professor of Volcano Seismology

Tenure-track faculty position in Volcano Seismology - the University of Alaska Fairbanks and Alaska Volcano Observatory

The Geophysical Institute (GI) and Department of Geosciences at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) are seeking a new, tenure-track volcano seismology faculty member at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. The successful applicant will work as part of the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) and will help with the modernization of AVO’s seismic network and associated research and processing. The new hire will split time between teaching and research, with 1/4 time teaching (3-4 credits per 9-month academic year) and 3/4 research and service and will be based at the GI and AVO. The new faculty member will also support UAF’s service and outreach mission. After an initial startup period, the new hire will be expected to raise additional research support from external grant agencies apart from AVO by leading and collaborating on proposals for innovative new research.

3.Seismology Graduate Student Positions at The University of Alabama

The Department of Geological Sciences at The University of Alabama seeks motivated students who are interested in pursuing graduate studies in earthquake seismology. Student support is available starting Spring 2019 via both teaching and research assistantships, including involvement in a multi-institutional, collaborative NSF-funded project focused on Antarctic Earth structure, seismic tomography, and tectonics. Possible research topics include, but are not limited to, methods for Earth model comparison, numerical waveform modeling, and ambient seismic noise. The successful student(s) will gain experience working on high-performance computing clusters. Ph.D. applicants are preferred, but M.S. applicants are also welcome to apply. Prior research experience and computer programming skills are beneficial. For more information, please contact Dr. Samantha Hansen (shansen@geo.ua.edu) with a copy of your CV, transcripts, and GRE scores.

4.TES SFA Modeling Postdoctoral Scholar

Berkeley Lab’s Climate & Ecosystems Division (https://eesa.lbl.gov/our-people/

division/climate-ecosystem-sciences)has an opening for a TES SFA Modeling Postdoctoral Scholar. You will be part of a team at LBNL working on a whole-soil warming experiment and analysis project. The goals include analyzing soil biogeochemical, plant, and hydrological dynamics important for soil organic matter responses to climate; developing, testing, and applying mechanistic models for these processes; and using those analyses to inform observational and experimental needs for land model improvement. We seek talented applicants with skills in (1) application of models to analyze ecosystem processes; (2) terrestrial ecosystem model development and algorithm coding; and (3) analysis and interpretation of large complex datasets. A primary goal of this position will be to develop realistic, mechanistic, and testable land models that can be applied across spatial and temporal scales and integrated with Earth System Models. Analyzing centennial-scale terrestrial biosphere responses to climate will be an important component of the research.
