The University of South Florida College of Marine Science, located in Saint Petersburg, Florida, is actively seeking to fill two open rank positions in oceanography:We seek a Geological Oceanographer whose research complements the strengths of the current faculty. We seek a hypothesis-driven scientist who uses a process-based approach to understand problems central to the ocean and its connections to the Earth systems. The candidate will use innovative techniques to investigate the effects of environmental change on the evolution of the stratigraphic record over a broad range of spatial and temporal scales. For questions regarding the available position please contact Dr. Brad Rosenheim, brosenheim@usf.edu or Tim Trowbridge, ttrowbridge@usf.edu (727-553-3375). Applications must be submitted through Careers@USF. Direct link to job posting can be found here.

We seek a Chemical Oceanographer who will contribute to an understanding of the ocean/climate system, from basic disciplinary topics to ecosystems analyses. Qualified candidates will employ modern tools of multi-disciplinary science to understand regional and global issues critical to the ocean system. For information regarding the available position, please contact Dr. Kristen Buck, kristenbuck@usf.edu or Tim Trowbridge, ttrowbridge@usf.edu (727-553-3375). Applications must be submitted through Careers@USF. Direct link to job posting can be found here.

2.PhD position in assessing groundwater contribution to river thermal refuges for fish

This PhD research is part of a larger project entitled “Towards restoration and protection of fish habitats affected by mining activities in the North: Focus on the Caniapiscau River watershed” supported by the Environmental Damages Fund of Environment and Climate Change Canada. The source of the Caniapiscau River is around 52° latitude. The river crosses the northern Quebec for 400 km. It is located within the Ungava Bay catchment area and is recognized for its abundance of salmonids. The optimal temperature range for Salmonidae growth varies according to species, but is between 7°C and 17°C and lethal temperature range is 25-27°C. In summer, salmonids experience thermal stress in some rivers because of higher average water temperatures that affect their growth and even threaten their survival. Some specific zones in rivers constitute thermal refuges allowing fish to be more comfortable, grow and survive in some extreme cases. Extreme conditions are likely to occur more frequently in several rivers in Quebec due to climate change.

3.NOSAMS Graduate Student Internship Program

Two internships will be awarded this year to U.S. graduate students for research at the NOSAMS radiocarbon facility at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The internships should involve application of radiocarbon measurements to an important oceanographic research problem and/or development of new techniques for radiocarbon measurement and will provide 2 to 6 weeks at NOSAMS. Available funds will cover all analytical costs (for a modest number of analyses), round-trip travel, accommodation and subsistence while in Woods Hole, but not field work and sampling.

6.Postdoc and PhD-student openings at EPFL

Funded by the ERC Advanced Grant UltraPal, the Laboratory for Biological Geochemistry at EPFL is opening several research positions at the Postdoc and/or PhD-student level during the fall of 2018.

The isotopic and elemental compositions of calcite structures formed by organisms (such as foraminifera, brachiopods, mollusks …) are frequently used for paleo-environmental reconstructions. However, visually imperceptible, ultrastructure-level processes that occur during sediment burial/diagenesis can introduce a strong bias in these records. The objectives with UltraPal are to experimentally constrain these processes, quantify their impact, and correct paleo-environmental records.
